Big Business, Big Mistake

When it comes to “Going Green“, you either are or you aren’t.  Companies think its the latest craze, but I can tell you from NBC5 experience “Going Green” can be a tough sell.  Every time we air a “Going Green” piece the ratings plummet like the temperatures in the arctic after I spray my aerosol can into the air.

Reliant Energysent out hundreds of energy saving CFL light bulbs. Nice effort.  But the energy giant packed those bulbs in Styrofoam chips.  It just so happens, Styrofoam is the worst thing there is for the environment.  Who paid that marketing firm to come up with a “Green” gift, that actually hurts the environment?

I’m not sure Texans and their SUVs have the same passion for the environment that those in Colorado or Maine have.  I know I’ll get emails from the 6 members of the Sierra Club and 5 members of ELF (Earth Liberation Front) telling me how wrong I am… I hope they are right!

I bet most people like the story on Reliant making a marketing mishap, not because it’s an environmental story but because everyone hates the electric companies.  Did I mention your bills are about to go sky high as we move into summer?

The energy saving bulbs Reliant sent out is a great idea, the packaging they sent them in was not.

Note to the Environmentally conscious: In case you want to turn those Styrofoam chips in to be reused, click it here.  Most UPS Stores  take the chips as well.
